Unfortunately, counselling is not a 24 hour service. If you find yourself needing immediate support for your mental health or advice on a specific issue, this page will point you towards helpful sources.
Crisis Support
- In the case of an emergency or risk of immediate harm, attend your local A&E or search for your local authority’s mental health crisis support number.
- The Samaritans, available 24 hours, have a variety of ways of accessing mental health support on their website along with a phoneline 116 123.
- A text support service is available 24 hours a day at Shout – text ‘shout’ to 85258 to speak to a trained volunteer. Messages won’t appear on phone bills.
- The NHS’s 111 phoneline can give advice and you may be able to speak to a trained mental health professional. There also accessible ways to contact 111 on their website.
- The Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM) has a suicide support phoneline between 5pm and midnight on 0800 585858 along with a web chat and whatsapp service on their website.
Support for Young People
- Childline have a 24 hour support phoneline for anyone under the age of 19 0800 1111. You can also email them and get 1-2-1 support from a counsellor if you set up an account on their website.
- The Mix provides a crisis messenger service 24 hours for under 25s that can be accessed by texting THEMIX to 85258. Their website provides helpful information and the possibility of counselling support.
- Nightline provide mental health support to students in higher or further education across the UK. Visit their website to type in your University to access their phoneline.
Other Support
- The Hub of Hope is a UK-wide database that allows you to search for a variety of support or specific services in your local area.
- Switchboard is the national LGBTQIA+ support line, open from 10am to 10pm daily, on 0800 0119100 or available via email and chat on their website.
- Rethink Mental Illness offer a variety of support services from support groups to expert advice. Visit their website and type in your postcode to find services local to you.
